Embracing Change: A Journey to Pursuing Your Dreams

Change is an inevitable part of life, and it often brings a mix of emotions—fear, uncertainty, and excitement. I always had a plan and thought of change as an obstacle in this, as I witnessed adversity and changes in my life after high school, I became a self-proclaimed change management expert. I want to share insight on how to embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a hurdle.

As I change through periods of my life, I encounter heartache and uncertainty but also success. Growing up, I was taught to dream big and bold and with that, I knew that changes would arise. However, I was never equipped for how hard they would be and the amount of discomfort that they would bring. Chasing your dreams requires you to leave your family, it requires you to sacrifice your home, and your comfort, and it requires your resilience. This is the type of change that tests how badly you want and if in fact, you really want it at all. .When it comes to this, some may feel weak but as cliche as it sounds, knowing what you don’t want, is just as powerful as knowing what you do. My life has changed. It changed from high school to university and from university to now. Through these periods, I realized things that made me want a better life for myself and things that I wanted to remain in my story. Until now, I remain on a path to shaping and carving my perfect life.

Breaking Stereotypes: Embracing Change and Chasing Dreams – A Model's Perspective

In a world often defined by societal expectations and cultural norms, breaking free from stereotypes can be a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. As an Indian woman and a model, my life has been a canvas of change, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams. In this blog post, I invite you to explore the transformative power of embracing change and chasing dreams through the lens of my unique experiences.

Embracing Change: Redefining Beauty Standards

Questioning Conventional Beauty:

Growing up Indian, beauty was often confined to certain standards. How did I challenge these norms and redefine beauty on my terms? Because of the colonial impact, I was often told that being fair was being beautiful and that I was special for my fair skin and colonized features. I wanted thin eyebrows, smaller lips, and silky smooth hair. However, I did not know that the richness of my hair, the thickness of my lips, and depth of my skin would lead to my ultimate success. As a young girl, I witnessed change within my own body, the external world, and even trends. The world went from loving pencil eyebrows to desiring bushy, laminated, furry brows. It was as if they wanted to silence my beauty and take it for themself. As I began to mature, I began to love and nurture the sides of my which were rich in culture. The side of me that reflected generations of women, fight, and stories. My skin, my hair, my lips are now the biggest asset in my career.

Embracing Diversity:

As a model, I encountered both the beauty industry's limitations and its evolving embrace of diversity. How has the industry changed, and how did I contribute to this shift? I was never asked if I wanted to model, I was simply scouted. This experience felt a bit odd to me as a young girl as I felt that the answer HAD to be yes. It was every girl’s dream wasn’t it? Little did I know that the changes imposed on me by this superficial industry would spiral me into restriction, and self-doubt.

The modelling industry is undergoing a significant transformation to become more inclusive and diverse, reflecting a broader range of backgrounds, body types, ethnicities, and identities. Several factors contribute to this positive shift:

  1. Increased Representation:

    • Ethnic Diversity: Fashion brands and agencies are now recognizing the importance of ethnic diversity on runways and in campaigns. There's a growing emphasis on showcasing models from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.

    • Body Positivity: The industry is moving away from the traditional, narrow beauty standards, embracing models with diverse body types, sizes, and shapes. This change aims to promote body positivity and reduce the prevalence of unrealistic beauty ideals.

  2. Inclusive Casting and Booking:

    • Age Diversity: There's a push for inclusivity in terms of age, with more opportunities for models across different age groups. Brands are recognizing the beauty of diversity in experiences and perspectives.

    • Gender Inclusivity: The industry is challenging traditional gender norms, welcoming models who identify across the gender spectrum. This shift promotes a more inclusive and accepting representation of gender diversity.

  3. Campaigns Celebrating Authenticity:

    • Brands are increasingly focusing on authenticity, favouring models who can authentically represent their values and connect with diverse consumer bases. This approach has led to more inclusive campaigns that celebrate individuality.

  4. Social Media and Activism:

    • Social media platforms have become powerful tools for aspiring models and activists to demand inclusivity. Movements like #BlackModelsMatter and #DropThePlus have sparked conversations about the need for better representation and diversity within the industry.

  5. Industry Initiatives and Policies:

    • Several modelling agencies and industry organizations have implemented initiatives and policies to encourage diversity. This includes actively seeking out models from underrepresented groups and implementing measures to ensure equal opportunities.

  6. Education and Awareness:

    • The industry is placing a greater emphasis on education and awareness regarding diversity and inclusion. Models, agencies, and brands are becoming more informed about the cultural sensitivity and awareness necessary for respectful and inclusive representation.

  7. Consumer Demand for Diversity:

    • Consumers are increasingly demanding diversity in advertising and media. Brands are recognizing the financial benefits of appealing to a broader audience and are adjusting their strategies accordingly.

  8. Celebrating Uniqueness:

    • There's a growing appreciation for models who stand out for their uniqueness, whether it be in terms of physical features, personal style, or cultural background. This celebration of individuality is helping to redefine beauty standards.

While progress is being made, there is still work to be done. The industry's commitment to inclusivity needs to be ongoing, addressing not only visible diversity but also fostering an environment that supports models from all walks of life throughout their careers. I use my vessel to fuel this change and make an impact wherever I go. Whether it is mentorship, advocating, or simply managing my own representation, I crave change and I am proud to be a part of it.

Navigating Transitions: From Tradition to Modernity

Balancing Tradition and Aspirations:

As an Indian woman, navigating the delicate balance between traditional values and modern aspirations has been a constant theme. How did I find harmony and acceptance in this duality?

I struggled with this idea for a long time. I felt as though I owed it to my ancestors to do more, live bigger, and optimize my opportunities. However, I also felt guilt for how I was pushing boundaries and doing things they would have never dreamed of. I came across this poem by Rupi Kaur that perfectly put my thoughts into art:

Transitioning to the Global Stage:

Moving from local to international platforms brought its own set of challenges. How did I adapt to the global modelling scene while staying true to my cultural roots? Modelling on the international scale was a big goal of mine but I promised myself that I would get an education first and if time allowed me to, I would embark on an International modelling career as a way to travel, see the world, and work. After that, I told myself I would go back to “reality” which for me would have been law school. When I graduated, the pandemic hit and my beloved grandma was in and out of the hospital. Because of this, I chose to stay local and put my international dreams on hold. I enjoyed moments with my grandma and held on to her stories of culture, life, and purpose. I often shared my goals of moving to London and even joked with her about how I would move to London and fall in love after her passing. I began to move around secondary markets like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal while visiting home and splitting time every time my grandma had a scare. I cherished the moments I spent with her and eventually, she passed peacefully. I knew it was time for me to fly, and the process of missing my biggest role model fuelled me even more to embark on my wildest dreams. Till this day, I know my grandma is always with me, cheering me on, and of course, probably reacting to the amount of cultural barriers I am constantly breaking. Fast forward to now, I am signed in majority of the primary markets and I continue to push for more. I stay true to my cultural roots by constantly keeping the work of my ancestors, and my grandma in mind. I crave more for women who look like me, feel like me, and want what I want. I refuse to let industry standards silence my potential, and simply put, I f***ing love it.

The Power of Resilience: Overcoming Prejudice

Facing Stereotypes:

Stereotypes surrounding Indian women are pervasive. How did I confront these biases and turn them into opportunities for growth? Confronting stereotypes surrounding Indian women in the modelling industry can be a powerful journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Here are some strategies I use to navigate and overcome these biases, turning them into opportunities for personal and professional growth:

  1. Embrace Your Cultural Identity:

    • Instead of shying away from my Indian identity, I embrace it proudly. Showcase the richness and diversity of Indian culture through my work and style. Challenge the notion that beauty is confined to a narrow set of standards.

  2. Educate and Advocate:

    • Use your platform to educate others about the diversity within the Indian culture. Challenge stereotypes by sharing insights into the traditions, customs, and values that make each individual unique. Advocate for a more inclusive representation of Indian women in the modelling industry.

  3. Collaborate with Like-minded Professionals:

    • Collaborate with photographers, designers, and other professionals who appreciate and celebrate diversity. Working with individuals who share your values can help create authentic and empowering representations in your portfolio.

  4. Highlight Versatility:

    • Showcase your versatility as a model by taking on a range of projects that go beyond stereotypical roles. Demonstrate that Indian women can be just as versatile and adaptable as models from any other background.

  5. Challenge Beauty Norms:

    • Use your presence in the industry to challenge conventional beauty norms. Participate in campaigns and projects that redefine beauty standards and promote a more inclusive perspective. Encourage the industry to move away from one-size-fits-all beauty ideals.

  6. Tell Your Story:

    • Share your personal story and experiences as an Indian woman in the modelling industry. Discuss the challenges you've faced and how you've overcome them. Authentic storytelling can humanize your journey and inspire others facing similar biases.

  7. Network with Diverse Professionals:

    • Build a network of professionals who appreciate diversity. Attend events, workshops, and networking opportunities that celebrate inclusivity. Connect with like-minded individuals who can provide support and advice.

  8. Be Confident and Assertive:

    • Confidence is key in the modelling industry. Be assertive in expressing your unique qualities and capabilities. Confidence not only challenges stereotypes but also helps you navigate the industry with resilience.

  9. Create Your Own Opportunities:

    • If traditional avenues are not providing the opportunities you seek, consider creating your own. Launch personal projects, collaborate with independent designers, or even start your own initiatives that showcase the beauty of diversity.

  10. Educate Yourself on Industry Trends:

    • Stay informed about the evolving trends in the modelling industry, especially those related to diversity and inclusion. Being well-informed will help you navigate and contribute positively to the changing landscape.

Remember, by confronting stereotypes head-on, you not only empower yourself but also contribute to a more inclusive and representative industry. Your unique perspective and experiences as an Indian woman in modelling can be a powerful force for positive change.

Learning from Setbacks:

In a competitive industry, setbacks are inevitable. How did I use resilience as a tool to bounce back stronger and more determined than ever? In the whirlwind of the modelling industry, setbacks are like unexpected storms that can either sweep you away or make you more resilient than ever. I've danced with my fair share of setbacks, and each stumble became a stepping stone to a stronger version of myself. When rejection knocks at your door, it's easy to question your worth and wonder if you belong. I remember the first rejection hitting me like a tidal wave. Instead of letting it drown me, I took a deep breath and decided to swim against the current. Resilience, for me, became not just a survival instinct but a tool to carve my path in this competitive world.

Understanding the Power of Perspective: Resilience starts with changing the lens through which you view setbacks. I chose to see rejection not as a dead end but as a detour leading to unforeseen opportunities. Each closed door was a chance to pivot, reassess, and redirect my energy toward paths less travelled.

Learning, Not Losing: Every setback became a classroom where I enrolled willingly. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, I focused on what I could learn from the experience. Critique transformed into valuable feedback, and I embraced it as a compass guiding me toward improvement.

Adapting to Change: The industry is a chameleon, ever-changing and demanding adaptability. Resilience, for me, was the ability to morph with the trends and evolve with the demands. I didn't resist change; I danced with it. I diversified my portfolio, experimented with different styles, and became a chameleon myself.

Creating a Support System: In the midst of the storm, having a support system was my anchor. Surrounding myself with positive influences, mentors, and peers who understood the struggles of the industry became crucial. Together, we shared stories of setbacks and triumphs, fostering a community that uplifted rather than competed.

Self-Care as a Survival Strategy: Resilience wasn't just about bouncing back; it was about staying in the game for the long run. Taking care of my physical and mental well-being became a priority. Whether it was finding solace in meditation, hitting the gym, or indulging in a guilty pleasure, self-care was my armour against burnout.

Fueling Determination: Setbacks weren't roadblocks; they were detours that fueled my determination. Each 'no' was a challenge accepted, propelling me towards the next opportunity with an unwavering spirit. I became not just resilient but relentless in my pursuit of success.

So, when the industry threw me a curveball, I caught it, learned its spin, and threw it back with even more force. Resilience, to me, isn't just about weathering the storm; it's about dancing in the rain and emerging stronger, fiercer, and more determined than ever to make my mark.

Chasing Dreams: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Defying Expectations:

Breaking away from the expected path can be daunting. How did I muster the courage to pursue a career in modelling against societal expectations? Embarking on a career in modelling, contrary to societal expectations, was like stepping into uncharted territory. The path less taken was shrouded in uncertainties and met with raised eyebrows. Yet, in the face of conventionality, I found the courage to forge my own way.

Defying Cultural Norms: In a society that often prescribed a predetermined roadmap, venturing into the unpredictable world of modeling was seen as unconventional, even rebellious. Breaking free from the traditional expectations meant challenging ingrained norms that dictated a more conventional career path. The courage to step out of that comfort zone stemmed from a deep-rooted belief in the validity of my aspirations.

Turning Skepticism into Fuel: The skepticism I encountered was palpable. Family and friends, well-intentioned but cautious, questioned the viability of a career in modelling. Instead of letting their concerns deter me, I used them as fuel. The doubt became a catalyst, propelling me forward with a determination to prove that unconventional doesn’t equate to impossible.

Fueled by Passion: Passion became my compass. The love for the art of modelling ignited a fire within that burned brighter than societal expectations. Every runway walked and every photoshoot undertaken wasn’t just a job; it was a manifestation of a burning passion that refused to be extinguished by societal norms.

Accepting Uncertainties: Choosing a career outside the norm came with its share of uncertainties. There was no well-worn path, no clear markers to guide me. Embracing the unknown became an integral part of the journey. Instead of fearing uncertainties, I saw them as opportunities for self-discovery and growth, adding an element of adventure to my pursuit.

Building a Support System: Surrounding myself with a support system was pivotal. While societal expectations may not have aligned with my choices, having a circle of like-minded individuals who understood my aspirations created a cocoon of encouragement. Their belief in my journey helped drown out the noise of societal disapproval.

Cultivating Self-Belief: In the face of raised eyebrows and hushed whispers, self-belief became my armor. Believing in the validity of my dreams when others couldn’t see beyond societal norms was empowering. It was a conscious choice to trust my instincts, knowing that the path I chose was authentically mine.

Celebrating Uniqueness: Rather than conforming to societal moulds, I celebrated my uniqueness. The very qualities that might have been perceived as deviations from the norm—whether cultural background, personal style, or individuality—became my strengths. Modelling allowed me to redefine beauty standards and contribute to a broader, more inclusive representation.

In retrospect, the courage to pursue a career in modelling against societal expectations wasn’t a solitary act but a series of choices—choices to embrace passion over conformity, to turn skepticism into determination, and to celebrate the uniqueness that set me apart. It wasn’t just about modelling; it was about modelling a life true to myself, against the backdrop of societal expectations.

Inspiring Others:

As an Indian woman in the modelling industry, I recognize the importance of inspiring others. How do I use my platform to encourage individuals to chase their dreams, no matter how unconventional? Navigating the modelling industry as an Indian woman has given me a unique perspective on the importance of inspiring others to pursue their dreams, especially when those dreams defy societal norms. Here's how I leverage my platform to encourage individuals to follow their unconventional paths:

  7. Building a Supportive Community: Creating a supportive community is a priority for me. I establish platforms, forums, or social media groups where individuals can connect, share their dreams, and find encouragement from like-minded individuals. This sense of community serves as a powerful motivator.

  8. Collaborating with Inspirational Figures: I actively seek collaborations with individuals who have inspiring stories or expertise in diverse fields. Through interviews, panel discussions, or joint projects, I bring a variety of voices and experiences to the forefront, reinforcing the idea that success takes many forms.

  9. Encouraging Uniqueness: I consistently emphasize the beauty of individuality and uniqueness. Through my content, I celebrate differences and showcase that unconventional dreams often stem from embracing what makes each person distinct. Encouraging authenticity is a central theme in my message.

  10. Thoughtful Social Media Presence: Leveraging my social media platforms, I curate a positive and inspiring digital space. Whether through quotes, personal anecdotes, or collaborations, I aim to create a supportive online environment that encourages others to dream big and fearlessly pursue their passions.

My goal is to extend my influence beyond the runway and use my platform to inspire individuals to break free from societal constraints, reminding them that their dreams, no matter how unconventional, are valid and worth pursuing.
